Whether properties include some or all utilities in the monthly rent varies from property to property. Make sure you have a good understanding of what’s included before you sign the lease.

Some properties have a specific service that’s used to split utility costs between roommates. There are several online services that can help roommates keep track of utility expenses. NOTE: some of these services have a one-time setup fee, or a monthly service charge, so you will need to budget for that as well.

Electricity will need to be set up through Alabama Power if your landlord doesn’t include power in your monthly rent.

Alabama Power can provide you with a 12-month average of the power bill at a particular address. To request that information, call Alabama Power’s Residential Customer Service line at 1-800-245-2244, and choose options to speak to Billing (M-F 7am – 9pm CST).

Alabama Power also provides energy efficiency tips, including ways to save energy with cooking, seasonal tips, with appliances and more.

If your home has gas heating or appliances, you will need to set up an account through Spire Energy (formerly Alagasco).

Some rental properties will require that you establish water service in your name. This can be done through the City of Tuscaloosa.
